More than 600 people perused the Hilo Photography Club’s annual photo display at the Hawaii County Fair and voted for their favorite images.

Lava entry photos by Charles Wood placed first and second in the voting. Animals were the next most popular subject, with Vijay Karai’s large elephant photo placing third and his photo of a snarling lion placing fourth, despite the broken glass in its frame that was damaged during mounting.

There were 33 photos entered in all.

The Hilo Photography Club was founded more than 40 years ago and welcomes photographers of every level. Meetings take place the third Wednesday of the month at the Kamana Senior Center.

During the next meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 18, Wood will present photographs and video of Western Australia, including photos of Pinnacles Desert, the Kimberley Region and Purnululu, Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, and camels at Broome Beach.

In a short second presentation, Karai, the club president, will update members on the Photographic Society of America.

Hilo Photography Club membership is $20 a year, which can be paid during any meeting. For more information about the club, visit www.hilophotoclub.org.
