Ah Chong loses match play final

Dillon Ah Chong of Keaau lost in the final of the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Championships in the boys 13-14 division at Kanapali Kai Course in Lahaina, Maui.

On Saturday, the third-seeded Ah Chong recorded victories against Puniawa Vedder (7 and 5) and Noah Koshi (2 up), but No. l seed Jake Sequin of Oahu won Sunday’s championship 3 and 2.

Waiakea’s Kailey Oki won a match Saturday before bowing out in the girls 13-18 quarterfinals, and Waiakea Aidan Oki won in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals in boys 13-14.

Free UHH tennis clinic in tap

The University of Hawaii at Hilo tennis program will host a free tennis clinic from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 9 at the UHH tennis courts.

The clinic is open to players of all ages and will be staffed by UHH men’s and women’s tennis players and be directed by Vulcans tennis coach Tina McDermott, the Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year in 2017.

UHH softball goodwill classic

The UH-Hilo softball program will host the Labor Day Goodwill Classic on Sept. 2-3, a fundraising event to benefit the program.

The tournament will feature a kupuna division and a mixed/coed division. Each team is guaranteed two games per day during the Saturday-Sunday event.

The deadline to register is Friday

Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be served throughout the tournament. The concession stand will also be open, featuring the popular fried fish plate and more.
