The Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association, East Hawaii Region, Mamalahoe Chapter announced the recipients of its 2017 college scholarship.
A total of $3,000 was awarded to six students who will attend the fall semester at either the University of Hawaii at Hilo or Hawaii Community College Manono campus to assist and encourage Native Hawaiians to further their education. The $500 awards were made to three high school seniors who graduated this year and three who are continuing their education post-high school.
• Courtney Kelii, 2017 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii, is pursuing a degree and career as a neonatal nurse. She will attend UH-Hilo in the fall and enrolled as a collegiate athlete to play soccer.
• Kailey Lapenia, 2013 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii, is pursuing a degree and career as a physical therapist. She will continue to attend UH-Hilo and hopes to earn her doctorate in physical therapy.
• Braysen Libed, 2016 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama, is pursuing a degree and career in kinesiology and exercise science. He will continue to attend UH-Hilo in the fall and hopes to further his career post-college with a doctorate in physical therapy.
• Joyce Lilly, 2014 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii, is pursuing a degree and career in agriculture. She will continue to attend UH-Hilo and hopes to continue her education and earn a master’s degree in agriculture and conservation.
• Kiarra Lincoln, 2017 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii, is pursuing a degree and career as an architect. She will attend UH-Hilo in the fall and hopes to motivate and inspire others to go after their dreams.
• Talan Nakamura, 2017 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Hawaii, is pursuing a degree and career in kinesiology and exercise science. He will attend UH-Hilo and hopes to become a career firefighter in Hilo.

Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship
Merriman’s Restaurant Waimea announced the 2017-18 recipients of the annual Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship.
Culinary students Damien Robledo and Kaitlyn Silva, attending Hawaii Community College Manono, were each awarded $1,300.
“All of this year’s applicants showed strong qualities, passion for the field and a promising future in the culinary program,” said Brandi Romain-Smith, director of operations, Merriman’s Waimea.
Started in 2000, Merriman’s Culinary Scholarship provides scholarships for students entering or continuing in the field of culinary arts at either Hawaii Community College or the University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii. The scholarships are awarded annually based on applicants’ outstanding qualities, passion for the field and financial need.
