Saturday looks like a sports family’s dream for Pahoa.

Saturday looks like a sports family’s dream for Pahoa.

A grand opening for the newly completed Pahoa District Park is scheduled, with a blessing at 9 a.m. and activities beginning at 10 a.m.

“As a 35-year resident of Puna, yay!” said Gaila Vidunas. She’s a lover of the swimming pool and thrilled to see expansion of other recreational opportunities.

Activities at the grand opening will include food concessions by Pahoa High School football families; a baseball clinic; home run derby with Team Nspyr and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans; football clinic; punt, pass and kick contest with Pahoa coaches; soccer clinic with the Vulcans; and volleyball clinic and serving contest with Pahoa coaches.

Vidunas said she wishes there were more walking and jogging trails included in the new park, but every added venue is good and she’s “very happy to see recreational activities.”

The swimming pool, Vidunas said, is “some of the very best use of taxpayer money.” And she’s excited Pahoa District Park will officially join the community’s recreational options as of Saturday.
