Getting back to basics is very much akin to Zentangle’s motto: Anything is possible one stroke at a time.

Getting back to basics is very much akin to Zentangle’s motto: Anything is possible one stroke at a time.

It’s an effective way to revisit or refresh the basic “tangles” of Zentangle.

Instructor Julie Evans will tell you, “There are no ‘levels’ of Zentangle, just levels of concentration.”

How very Zen.

For the uninitiated, Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.

At first glance, it looks like doodling.

But on another level, it is manipulating symbols shared across cultures and times.

According to instructors Evans and Lois and Earl Stokes (the state’s only certified Zentangle teachers), it’s a type of yoga for creative expression and a fascinating art form with ancient connections to universal symbol and pattern making.

“Zentangle: Basics” will be offered from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.

The fee is $45. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Zentangle process is a ceremony and a moving mediation that increases the awareness of patterns in the environment and within yourself.

Influenced by the healing arts, Lois and Earl Stokes consider Zentangle a metaphor for life.

“We find this intuitive art form to be an empowering and uplifting experience,” said Lois Stokes. “If you can draw a dot, a line, and a circle you can create these patterns. Learning to break down a task into its simplest form, then repeating it over and over, creates confidence.”

The Volcano Art Center is a nonprofit educational organization created in 1974 to promote, develop and perpetuate the artistic and cultural heritage of Hawaii’s people and environment through activities in the visual, literary and performing arts.
