Glitz and glamour were overflowing at Waiakea High School’s 35th annual Variety Show, “Putting on the Glitz,” on Feb. 22 at the Warrior Gym.

With more than 125 students involved in the production, the show was dedicated to English teacher Shellie Naungayan, who was instrumental in many of the school’s past productions.

After 33 years of teaching, she is retiring after this school year.

Performances ranged from piano and ukulele instrumental numbers, singers, jazz dancers, a rock ’n’ roll group and the spirited class acts.

Winners in the talent competition were: Jake Ebesugawa, Dayva Escobar, and Silver Lining composed of band members Brennen Kamai-Desamito, Gabe Lopez, Nick Minami, Kyle Sabate, Isaiah Tao and Elias Yadao in first, second and third place, respectively. In the class competition, it was the Class of 2014 Wolves who took top honors.

Prior to intermission, a special presentation was made.

In December, Waiakea High’s Student Government Association hosted its seventh annual Santa’s Workshop.

New or like-new items were collected and then sold to elementary school students from Waiakeawaena and Waiakea Elementary Schools at discounted prices. These gifts were wrapped and tagged and presented to their friends and family at Christmas.

Annually, the proceeds raised from this event are donated to a nonprofit organization. This year, Waiakea High’s SGA presented a $1,000 check to Cheryl Jackson and Michele Costa-Rocha from Easter Seals of Hawaii, Early Intervention Program.

Past recipients include: PBS, Ronald McDonald House, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Friends of Panaewa Zoo and Hospice of Hilo.

Glenn Yafuso of Yafuso Sound and Henry Makizuru of Volcano Town Productions lent their professional expertise with sound and lighting.
