One of the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s most successful programs is looking for a new leadership.
The school announced Tuesday that softball coach Jaime Wallin will resign at the end of June when her contract expires.
“We very much appreciate the efforts that Jaime has made to promote the Vulcans brand through softball,” interim athletic director Tim Moore said in a statement. “It’s always difficult to lose the contributions from a member of our team, and in Jaime’s case it would be her passionate competitive drive.”
In four years under Wallin, the Vulcans went 113-73.
The highlight of her tenure came last year when UHH shared the Pacific West Conference championship and earned a berth to the NCAA Division II tournament.
However, halfway through last season the Vulcans were dealt a blow when ace pitcher Vanessa Salinas left the program. UHH’s pitching issues lingered into 2014, and it finished 22-20 with the fourth-worst team ERA (4.15) in the PacWest.
Wallin’s resignation gives Moore the opportunity to make his first coaching hire since he took interim duties earlier this year.
If the Vulcans go the interim route in their softball search, one potential candidate could be Fred Entilla, who has been an assistant with the program in the past.
UHH lost four players to graduation, including two-time Player of the Year Rebecca Lee, and the school had yet to release any signings from the Class of 2014.
