During the week of May 5-11, Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21. The numbers of arrests by district: South Hilo, 10; South Kohala, 5; Puna, 4; and Kona, 1.

So far this year, there have been 465 DUI arrests compared to 481 in the same period last year, a decrease of 3.3 percent. There have been 586 major accidents so far this year compared to 499 in the same period last year, an increase of 17.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been five official traffic fatalities compared to 13 in the same period last year, a 61.5 percent decrease. To date, three of those were linked to impaired driving — one to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
