For Dennis Tulang and Lehua Veincent, they will both be recipients of the Outstanding Leadership Award, presented this year at the Saint Joseph School Cardinal Ball. Each, an alumnus of SJS, has distinguished himself as a leader in his profession and community.

Tulang, a pioneer environmental engineer, began his 32-year career in 1968 with the state Department of Health and later as program manager of the Wastewater Branch administered by the Federal/State Wastewater Construction Grants Program, resulting in $1.2 billion of public wastewater infrastructure throughout the State. He continues to work as senior project manager for AECOM on water, wastewater and environmental projects.
Veincent’s 25-year career has been a steady climb up the ladder. With two bachelor’s degrees in business and Hawaiian studies, two certificates in Teacher Education and School Leadership, two master’s degrees in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Administration and a Ph.D. in Education on the horizon for this December, his leadership roles are no surprise. Within recent years, he served as principal for Ke Ana La‘ahana Public Charter School, Keaukaha School and now at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii High School. Hawaii Island Principal of the Year and a National Distinguished Principal nominee, Veincent continues to lead in his field of education.
The Cardinal Ball’s three Distinguished Service Awardees this year include Stella Kawaauhau, Mona Victorino and Dean Au. For the past 30 years, Kawaauhau has devoted her life to education and is especially known for her establishment of the Spalding Method of Reading at SJS and contributed to its making SJ Elementary School famous for the many student successes related to this phonics-based program.
Victorino is also being honored for her 30 years of service to the school. In addition to being a major help in establishing the phonics program Stella continued, Mona is known for her service from tutoring and teaching to volunteering at Penny Carnivals, Country Fairs, leading Brownies and most recently being a major part of the Alumni &Friends of SJS serving as membership and luau chairs.
Au, who by day works as a Hilo field representative for the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters, has spent the rest of his last 10 years serving on the school’s advisory board, as the school’s facilities chair, in a leadership role in its country fairs and being active in revitalizing the school’s athletic program. The title he is most proud of is “Coach Dean,” through which he impacts student lives by “teaching them respect for others, self respect, discipline and focus, providing them with the foundation of who they are going to be.”
