More than 40 Hilo High School students recently participated in a PTSA sponsored “Reflections” competition promoting arts in education and student expression through a variety of artistic and original works.

During the past 40 years, the National PTA Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a theme and create original artwork. This year’s theme was “Believe, Dream, Inspire.”

Each submission was judged by a group of professional community members. They included Stephen Freedman in the area of visual arts, Britten Traughber for photography, Amy Baum in literature, Gerdine Markus concerning music composition and Robert Duerr for film production.

The student winners were: Anthony Rosario, Yaeko Tagami and Abigail Atkinson in visual arts; Wincel Ballesteros, Riah Seymour and Terren Cabalar in photography; Dylan Giardina, Shantell Nakasono and Hauoli Victor-Isabel in literature; Jessica Caro, Mark Jimenez and Jordan Pule in music composition; and Shayli Lim in film production.

The top three winners received cash awards of $50, $30 and $20 for first, second and third place, respectively, from the Hilo High School PTSA in each category.

The remaining students received a $5 gift certificate to Sophia’s Yogurt Bar in Hilo.

The winning submissions will also advance to the Regional Reflections PTA Competition.
