Pahoa’s public pool will be closed for up to 120 days beginning later this year as Hawaii County adds solar panels and makes repairs.

Jason Armstrong, county Parks and Recreation spokesman, said the closure will begin sometime after Nov. 1.

A contract for the estimated $1.5 million project will be awarded as early as next week.

The solar panels will heat the pool. Public pools in Honokaa and Konawaena are also heated with solar panels.

Armstrong said an intermittent leak will also be fixed.

The leak occurs when there’s a power outage that lasts for more than two hours. The outage causes the pumps to stop, and without the pressure, water is lost through the drainage system.

Better equipment will be installed to prevent that from happening, Armstrong said.

He didn’t have any data on how much water is lost when that occurs.

Drain covers will also be upgraded.
