Free drive-in screening of ‘We Bought a Zoo’ in Waimea
The public is invited to a free drive-in movie screening at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Church Row in Waimea. On the program: “We Bought a Zoo,” starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. The family flick is presented by New Hope Waimea Christian Fellowship.
Cameron Crowe directed the adaptation of Benjamin Mee’s British memoir about buying and saving a run-down zoo, with the movie locale shifting from Britain to southern California.
According to church spokeswoman JenMcGeehan, the first drive-in theater was introduced on May 16, 1933, in Camden, N.J. Young inventor Richard Hollingshead’s vision of an open-air movie theater eventually became typical hometown fare throughout America.
In July 2011, the Waimea church embraced Hollingshead’s vision, offering Big Islanders a drive-in theater experience by setting up a big screen on Church Row to show “To Save A Life” and serving free popcorn and bottled water.
“Big Island families are once again invited to attend a movie night and enjoy ‘We Bought a Zoo,’” said McGeehan.
New Hope Waimea Christian Fellowship, located at 65-1078 Mamalahoa Highway at Church Row, holds Sunday services at 8 and 10 a.m., including nursery care and K.I.D.S Church.
