Pike participating in archaeology field school in NC
Sabrina Pike of Kailua-Kona is participating in the New River Headwaters Archaeology Project in Ashe County, N.C., this summer.
During the six-week field school led by assistant professor of anthropology Colin Quinn., students are investigating a prehistoric village — the Woodie Site — and conducting geophysical survey and excavations designed to find material remains.
By studying sites along the New River, they are afforded a unique opportunity to study human adaptation to mountain landscapes and explore broader questions about interaction, identity and climate change during the past 10,000 years.
Pike, a rising senior majoring in archaeology and creative writing at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., is a graduate of Kealakehe High School.
Lienau named to Wheaton dean’s list
Janey Lienau of Kailua-Kona was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. To earn dean’s list honors, an undergraduate student must carry 12 or more credit hours and achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Big Isle student receives degree from Southwestern
Chay Toson of Paauilo was part of the Southwestern College class of 2019 commencement ceremonies May 12 in Winfield, Kan. Toson graduated with a bachelor of arts degree.
San Jose graduates from RIT in NY
Nicolas San Jose of Waimea graduated from Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology in December with a bachelor of science degree in game design and development.
O’Connor named to spring dean’s list
Lopaka O’Connor of Papaikou was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2019 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. O’Connor is enrolled in the university’s College of Arts and Sciences. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or above and complete at least 14 graded units.
Isle student named to Hollins dean’s list
Dillon Casey Mathew-Gilmore, a rising senior psychology major at Hollins University in Roanoke, Va., was named to the spring 2019 dean’s list. To attain this distinction, students must earn at least a 3.5 average on a 4.0 grading scale. Mathew-Gilmore is a graduate of Hawaii Academy of Arts and Sciences in Pahoa.
