Compassion & Choices Hawaii volunteer Aubrey Hawk will give a presentation from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday (Jan. 19) at the Hilo Adult Day Center, located at 34 Rainbow Drive in Hilo, about the “Our Care, Our Choice” Act, the state’s new medical-aid-in-dying law.
Hawk will discuss circumstances in which the law gives terminally ill patients the right to request prescription medication to end their lives peacefully.
Why is this option important within the spectrum of end-of-life care?
Who is eligible?
How does the prescription process work?
How do we ensure meaningful access?
Each of those questions will be addressed during the presentation.
In the spirit of celebration and gratitude, this also is the last Respite Day at the 34 Rainbow Drive location, as Hawaii Island Adult Care says aloha and mahalo nui to that location before it moves to a new building at 561 Kupuna Place in Hilo.
Also part of the morning activities is a healthy continental brunch; quality time with HIAC’s nurse, Maleen Martin, who will be available to answer questions during the “Ask The Nurse” segment; and a tasty food demo by Hilo’s food guru, Audrey Wilson. In addition, massage therapists will be on hand to relax and revive attendees, and round off the morning with some Naam yoga.
The suggested donation to attend is $10; scholarships are available. Loved ones can attend adult day care while their caregivers get some respite.
