The Central Pacific basin, which includes Hawaii, is north of the equator between 140 degrees west and the International Date Line.
“Even though this season is predicted to be less active, now is the time for residents and businesses to prepare for hurricane season,” said Chris Brenchley, Central Pacific Hurricane Center director.
The dry season for the windward Big Island started May 1, while the wet season starts for the leeward portion of the island. The Climate Prediction Center predicts below-normal precipitation for the Big Island between May 1 and Sept. 30.
The wet season on the windward Big Island, which started Nov. 1, 2024, and ended April 30, was drier than normal, with Hilo International Airport registering 58.63 inches of rain, the third-driest total in the past 30 years.
