A private bulldozer also was employed to cut firebreaks to control the spread of the blaze near structures.

Several automobiles were destroyed in the fire, which was fanned by strong east-northeast winds.

The fire was reported under control at 4 p.m. and extinguished at 5:30 p.m.

There was no estimate of property damage, but an estimated $1 million in property was saved by the firefighting effort.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
