The participating Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) baseball and softball teams wrapped up their weeks at states on Oahu, capping off another great season.
DI baseball
Waiakea came up just short of state glory.
The Warriors fell 5-0 to Saint Louis in Saturday’s Division I state championship game, ending their season at 9-4-1. Earlier in the week, Waiakea beat Kaiser 4-2 and Baldwin 1-0 to advance to the state title game. The hometown Hilo team was seeking its third state championship.
The Warriors struggled offensively throughout the evening, producing just three hits to the Crusaders’ nine. Teyson Tamiya, Kysen Honda and Logan Doran led Waiakea in hits with one each.
Jerrell Alston and Zian Wery led the way on the mound for the Warriors, combining for nine allowed hits and four strikeouts.
Waiakea’s Hurley Soong was named to the HHSAA’s All-Tournament team after pitching a gem in the semis. He surrendered just four hits and no runs across 102 pitches (7.0 innings) in the win over Baldwin on the mound.
Saint Louis was led by Mana Heffernan with three base hits, followed by teammate Bruin Agbayani with two. Kahanukalahou Martinez, Kamakanikailialoha Kane, Chase Sutherland and Drake Kenui rounded out the remainder of the Crusaders’ hits with one apiece.
Lincoln Pang was the game’s winning pitcher, allowing just three hits and no runs across 77 pitches (7.0 innings).
The Crusaders finished 15-6 overall, securing their third state championship in school history.
In the consolation bracket, defending state champion Kamehameha-Hawaii beat Kailua 5-3 on Saturday, securing ninth place overall in the state.
The Warriors finished the season 13-2-1 overall.
KSH posted seven hits to the Surfriders’ four. Dayton Hanson led the winners with two hits, while teammates Noah Palea, Keagan Pacheco, Kamaka Ili, Iokepa Martines and Brock Ayudan each had one. Hanson, Keyan Kanahele and Kaikoa Nobriga each shared time on the mound.
Bradon Moore led Kailua with two hits, and teammates Devon Ishigo and Kaalekahi Kuhaulua each had one. Kuhaulua and Zayne Hookala were the Surfriders’ pitchers.
Kailua ended its season in 10th place in DI with a 10-6 overall record.
DII baseball
BIIF DII champion Pahoa, who was the No. 4 seed in the DII state tournament, fell 9-1 to Damien in Thursday’s quarterfinal.
The Monarchs logged seven hits to the Daggers’ four. Aaron Rapoza led Damien with three hits, while teammates MaxDeTrinis, Makana Freitas, Nainoa Begonia and Kingston Bajet-Kalauokaaea had one each.
Tanaloa Seguancia was the game’s winning pitcher for the Monarchs, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out four. Bullpen teammate Joe Paparo closed the game.
Pahoa’s Brayden Conda-Tolle led his team with two hits, while teammates Max Potter and Landon Haili each had one.
Tripp Kahsen, Haili and Conda-Tolle all shared time on the mound for Pahoa.
Pahoa went on to the consolation bracket, falling to Farrington 4-1 Friday. The Daggers finished the season 11-5 overall.
The Monarchs advanced to play Waianae in the state semifinals.
Honoka‘a, BIIF DII’s runner up, fell 4-2 to Kapa‘a in the quarterfinals Thursday. It was a low-scoring affair, as the Warriors had four hits to the Dragons’ three.
Kapa‘a’s Kimo Kupihea finished with a game-high two hits, while teammates Pierce Rosario and Kawika Kupihea each had one.
Kimo Kupihea was awarded the game’s winning pitcher, allowing just three hits and two runs while striking out 14 across 7.0 innings.
Josyah Napoleon-Umeda, Jayden Salazar and Isaac Derego each had one hit for Honoka‘a. Derego was also the Dragons’ long pitcher on the mound, allowing four hits and four runs while striking out seven.
Honoka‘a went on to play Seabury Hall in the consolation bracket Friday, also falling 4-2. The Dragons season ended at 13-5 overall.
The Warriors went on to play Kapolei in the state semifinals.
DI softball
BIIF DI softball champion Hilo’s season ended after being routed 10-0 by Kamehameha-Kapalama in the consolation bracket on Thursday. The Vik Queens closed their season at 11-2 overall.
KSK posted nine hits to Hilo’s two. Alex Ahlo-Garcia and Maika Kiakona led the Lady Warriors with two hits each, while teammates Jade Kiyan, Addison Wong, Kanoena Garcia, Sivaolegalumaimoana Gaea and Landri Nakano each had one hit.
Rylie Teramoto pitched for KSK, allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out 10.
Madison Waiki and Mackenzie Valentin produced Hilo’s only two hits with one each. Molly Davi was the lone Vik Queen in the circle, allowing 10 runs on nine hits while striking out eight.
On the other side of the consolation bracket, BIIF DI runner-up Waiakea fell 19-7 to Moanalua, ending its season at 8-6 overall. The game was called after four innings.
Na Menehune piled it on offensively all game, as Hunter Jackson led the way with a team-high three hits, while teammates Kaylah Sato and Karah Pasion each had two. Alia Anzai, Raean Bumgat, Kara Miyoshi, Kaiai Ledward, Oayton Woodall and Jolie Mochizuki each had one hit to round out the remainder of Moanalua’s hits.
Meghan Spencer led the Lady Warriors with three hits, including a home run. Teammate Tehani Chinen had two hits, logging another home run. Kaelyn Sewake additionally smacked three hits, while teammates Keani Kaneshiro and Rmi Dekoning added one hit each.
Kaitlyn Miura was the sole pitcher in the circle for Waiakea, allowing 13 hits and 19 runs.
DII softball
After dropping out after the opening round in the DII state tournament, Kamehameha-Hawaii was diverted to the consolation bracket, losing to Radford 9-2 on Thursday.
The Lady Rams logged 10 hits to the Lady Warriors’ four. Kyralee-Marie Cordeiro, Audrey Hoffman and Meghan Castro each had two hits apiece for Radford, while teammates Emma Hoolulu, Aylah Storrier, Brailyn Benjamin and Bella Futch each had one.
Brandie Pahia-Obra was the game’s winning pitcher after allowing four hits and two runs.
Kealohi Ili, Layla Masaoka, Alaula Awong and Kaililia Thompson-Ua each had one hit for KSH. Layla Masaoka and Olaa Brown pitched in the circle for the Lady Warriors.
KSH’s season ended at 8-5 overall.
On the other side of the consolation bracket, Kohala fell 9-0 to Aiea on Thursday, ending its season at 9-4 overall.
The Cowgirls were only able to produce two hits — one from Kalia Marquez and the other from Loryn Rose-Carvalho. Marquez and Faith Alejandro-Cazimero shared time in the circle for Kohala.
Na Alii logged eight hits, led by Chrijon Peneueta and Nylove Peneueta with two hits each. Teammates Kuuleilani Ching, Tiari Banno-Pei, Hiromi Kabua and Skye Tingkang each had one hit.
Chrijon Peneueta was the game’s winning pitcher after allowing two hits and no runs. Bullpen teammate Taja Souza also saw time in the circle.
