“Through their lifetimes of community service and exceptionalism in local business and county government, Nancy and Julie are living examples of empowered women who seek to empower others,” Sandra Tokuuke, event co-chair, said in a press release. “They are the embodiment of YWCA’s mission ‘to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.’ It is our great honor to acknowledge them this year.”
Cabral was born in San Francisco and has been a Hawaii Island resident since 1978. She entered real estate that same year, and became a broker in 1983. Incredibly, in the span of just 18 months, Cabral had her first child, got out of a nine-year abusive marriage and opened Day-Lum Inc., which evolved into Day-Lum Rentals &Management Inc.
Cabral has served on the boards of Kuikahi Mediation Center, Hawaii Community Foundation, H.C. Shipman Foundation and Rotary Club of Hilo. She is a member of Zonta Club of Hilo, National Association of Property Managers, Hilo Downtown Improvement Association, Hawaii Horse Owners Association and Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce.
She also serves on the State Land Use Commission as Hawaii Island representative, and has been elected to serve as Rotary’s district governor for Hawaii for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Tulang was raised on Kukaiau Ranch on the slopes of Maunakea, where her beef cattle-rancher father taught her self-sufficiency. She has worked in local education and government since 1967. After retiring as Hawaii County director of the Department of Parks and Recreation in 2000, she went on to serve as a foundation associate for the Hawaii Community Foundation until 2007. Tulang also coordinated the development of the Hawaii County Elderly Congregate Nutrition and Meals on Wheels Program for 18 years, and prior to that was an educator and home economist.
She has served on the boards of Hawaii Housing Authority, Hawaii Food Bank, Hawaii Health Systems Corp., American Cancer Society and currently both the Hilo Benioff Medical Center Regional and Hilo Benioff Medical Center Foundation boards. She has been a member of the Zonta Club of Hilo since 1982 and is currently serving her second term as president.
One hundred percent of funds raised from the Remarkable People luncheon and silent auction stay in the county to ensure YWCA of Hawaii Island’s vital services are available to those who need them. These services are provided through YWCA’s three signature programs: Sexual assault support services, including the only 24-hour sexual assault hotline for the island (808-935-0677); the Healthy Families program that empowers families to raise healthy, well-adjusted children; and YWCA preschool, one of the only nationally accredited, developmental preschools in East Hawaii.
