A three-day run of the classic musical “Kinky Boots” kicks off tonight at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center.
The beloved show — which won six Tony Awards, one Grammy, and the Olivier Award from Best Musical — features music and lyrics written by Cyndi Lauper and will be the final event of the Performing Arts Center’s 2024-25 season.
‘Alohi Gronquist, a 2010 graduate of UH Hilo who majored in theater during her time there, said she’s loving being back at her alma mater to offer the community a fun show with a positive message.
“’Kinky Boots’ is really about being proud of who you are and the freedom of self expression, the ability to shine as your individual self and be loud and proud in whatever that looks like,” she said. “It gives our community here in Hilo the chance to have this positive message of be true to who you are no matter what adversity you face, no matter what anyone says or thinks about how you are. Just shine rise up and be who you want to be”
The musical, which is based on a true story, tells the tale of Charlie Price inheriting his family’s shoe business and the levels of growth and self-realization he finds when working with his friend Lola, a drag queen who “is unapologetically who she is, even though during the show she goes through a little bit of trials herself,” Gronquist said.
Kyden De Sa, who portrayed Shrek at the Palace Theater last October, takes on the iconic role of Lola for this production. The other leading role of Charlie Price will be played by Tyler Ogawa.
The director said the university chose to put on a production of “Kinky Boots” long before the political drama surrounding drag queens that has become commonplace in the new federal administration.
“It’s allowing everyone to be seen for who they are. In theater, it’s so important we show those messages,” Gronquist said of her show becoming an accidental political statement. “That’s what theater’s for.”
Gronquist said the musical’s finale, “Raise You Up/Just Be,” really drives home the show’s message and she said the entire cast and crew working together are what makes the show so special.
“It’s such a true collaboration, and I love that about this production. Everyone have been super vital in making this production happen,” she said. “Hilo’s in for a great show.”
A live band playing the musical hits supports the diverse cast, which includes everyone from UH students to up-and-coming youth players as young as 8, as well as Bronquist’s 12-year-old son, Kala‘i, and former state Sen. Laura Acasio, who is in the show’s ensemble.
With songs like “Sex Is In The Heel,” the show is PG-13, but those of-age are in for “a fun show with a great message,” Bronquist said.
The three performances of “Kinky Boots” will happen at 7 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday. Tickets ranging from $10 to $20 can be ordered online at artscenter.uhh.hawaii.edu or by phone at (808) 932-7490.
