The Laupahoehoe Transfer Station will close for up to 10 months starting Monday, April 21, so significant improvements can be made to the facility.

The construction contract, awarded to Isemoto Contracting for $2.57 million, addresses structural and safety concerns and improvements to the user experience, according to a Hawaii County press release.

Work will involve installing a new canopy, repaving, and constructing a new rubbish chute, retaining wall, concrete swale and concrete pad.

The last day of operation for the Laupahoehoe Transfer Station prior to construction will be Sunday, April 20.

The transfer station is expected to reopen for business in early 2026.

During construction, the Honomu Transfer Station (28-1844 Old Mamalahoa Highway) will be open on additional days to accommodate residents.

Effective April 21, the Honomu Transfer Station will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day of the week except Wednesdays, when it will be closed.
