The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) softball and baseball season continued over the weekend with a slew of east-side games. Action will resume this week with matchups all across the island.
Hilo 4, Waiakea 1
Hilo softball took care of business Saturday afternoon against crosstown rival Waiakea, winning 4-1.
Both teams went scoreless through the first four innings, but the Lady Vikings earned the first score of the day at the top of the fifth, when first baseman Mackenzie Valentin smacked an RBI single. The winners then added three more runs in the seventh, while first baseman Lexi Santiago drove in the Lady Warriors’ only run of the day at the bottom of the same inning. It was Waiakea’s only hit of the game.
Hilo posted five hits to Waiakea’s one. Valentin logged eight of those hits, while second baseman Vaiqueen Porter and pitcher Molly Davi had one each. In the circle, Davi pitched the full 7.0 innings, allowing one hit while striking out an astounding 16 batters.
Meghan Spencer was Waiakea’s sole pitcher, going all 7.0 innings allowing five fits, four runs and striking out six.
KSH 11, Kona 1
Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i baseball scored four runs in two separate innings en route to its 11-1 rout of Konawaena on Saturday afternoon in Kea‘au. The Warriors cruised to 2-0 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 2-1.
KSH logged 11 hits to Kona’s three. The Warriors were led by second baseman Justin Kubojiri with a game-high four hits and three RBI. Center fielder Kamaka Ili and catcher Iokepa Martines posted two hits apiece, while third baseman Braden Gomes, first baseman Noah Palea, left fielder Keagan Pacheco and right fielder Kaikoa Nobriga all had one.
Shiloh Santos was the game’s winning pitcher for KSH, going 2.6 innings while allowing three hits, no runs and striking out two. Palea also closed the game on the mound, striking out two and allowing one run across the final 41 pitches.
Wildcat left fielder Kolt Baptista, infielder Kainoa Lorenzo and shortstop Hayden Nishida recorded their team’s only hits.
Kahiau Rivera was the losing pitcher from Kona — throwing for 3.0 innings and allowing seven runs while striking out two. Koa Nakagawa finished the game on the mound for the Wildcats, allowing one run and striking out two.
Pahoa 7, HPA 0
Pahoa baseball remained unbeaten in the early season after a 7-0 rout of Hawaii Prep on Friday afternoon in Pahoa town.
