Joseph De Reis Capellas, 77, of Hilo died Jan. 31. He was a construction business owner, homeless shelter director, hospitality worker at the former Naniloa Hotel and taught restaurant business skills at his alma mater, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, where he earned a degree in sociology. He was a letterman in basketball and baseball at St. Joseph High School and loved to dress up as Santa Claus and Elvis Presley. Celebration of life at Moku Ola, aka “Coconut Island,” at a later date. Survived by daughter, Natasha Capellas, Esq.; siblings, Sister Grace Jose Capellas of the Sisters of St. Francis, Elizabeth McPherson, Eugene “Buzzy” S. Capellas III and Charmaine (Ron) Ka-ipo; fiancée, Kapiolani (“Lani”) Medina-Weigert; Valerie Takata, mother of his daughter; nieces, a grandniece and grandnephews. Brandon-Shane Kalani Castillias, 36, of Hilo died Feb. 19 at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a warehouseman for Suisan. Romeo Caluya Villanueva Jr., 60, of Pahoa died Feb. 12 at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a caregiver.
