The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) spring sports season continued to kick off with baseball and volleyball matches across the isle over the weekend. Other springtime sports are slated to kick off this week, including track and field, judo and girls flag football.
HPA’s bats get hot
Hawaii Preparatory Academy baseball crossed the plate 10 times at the top of the fourth in Saturday’s game against Kohala, securing the run rule and winning 15-0 in Hawi. Ka Makani produced eight hits to the Cowboys’ one.
HPA second baseman Nishiki Iwai and teammate left fielder Leon Kikukawa led the way for the winners with two hits apiece and five RBI combined. First baseman Owen Smith, shortstop Evan Lustik, second baseman Kamea Leleiwi and right fielder Asher Anderson logging one hit each. Lex Ni and Wyley Ament pitched for Ka Makani, allowing no runs on one combined hit and six strikeouts.
Kohala shortstop Isaac Salvador-Libron produced the Cowboys’ only hit. Salvador-Libron and Hezekiah Wilson both pitched for the black and gold.
Ka Makani next takes the diamond at 3 p.m. Friday against the Daggers in Pahoa town, while the Cowboys’ next game is to be determined.
Waiakea goes to Maui
Waiakea baseball voyaged to Maui over the weekend to partake in the Baldwin Preseason Tournament, and the Warriors found success against some of the better teams in the state.
In Waiakea’s first matchup of the week on Thursday, it beat Maui High 5-1. The Warriors logged three runs at the top of the first inning, giving them a cushion for the rest of the afternoon. Waiakea also added two more runs in the seventh. In total, the Warriors posted eight hits to the Sabers’ two.
Maui’s lone run was scored at the bottom of the first,
Logen Doran and Conner Wallace were on the mound for Waiakea, combining for two allowed hits while striking out four.
Izaiah Koko, Andrew Gosselin and Frank Urias pitched for the Sabers. Koko gave up three runs on six hits while Gosselin gave up two. The trio combined for four strikeouts.
The Warriors hit the diamond again Friday, this time taking on Kailua. The two teams tied 3-3 after the Waiakea scored its runs in the third and fifth inning, while the Surfriders scored all of their runs in the first two innings. Waiakea posted six hits to Kailua’s five. The Warriors also had three less errors, recording just one in total.
Zian Wery and Ivor Brooks pitched for Waiakea — combining for three earned runs on five hits and three strikeouts. Brooks pitched for the remainder of the contest after Wery gave up two runs.
Rayvin Pagan and Ale Kuhaulua pitched for the Sabers, totaling three allowed runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts. Pagan did most of the heavy lifting, pitching for five innings.
Waiakea’s next matchup is to be announced.
Pahoa, CLA
reach win column
Pahoa boys volleyball won its second straight match in the early part of the season after beating Kea‘au in four sets Thursday in Pahoa town. The Daggers vaulted to 2-1.
Pahoa won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17, but the Cougars avoided the sweep with a narrow 25-23 third-set victory. The Daggers quickly adjusted and closed out the match in the following frame, winning 25-15.
Pahoa is back in action against Connections at 6 p.m. tonight in Hilo, hoping to continue its win streak.
Kea‘au dropped to 0-4, still looking for its first win of the early season. The Cougars will seek redemption against Waiakea at 5 p.m. at home. Junior varsity will play first.
Christian Liberty Academy boys volleyball swept Connections on Thursday night in Kea‘au, clinching its first win of the new season. The Canefire moved to 1-1, while the ‘Io fell to 0-2.
CLA won by scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 25-5. Its next test will be up against Kea‘au at 5 p.m. Friday at home. Connections will look to get its first win of the season against Pahoa tonight in Hilo.
