A 22-year-old Hilo man remains in jail on 19 criminal charges in connection with an armed robbery Tuesday on Waiakea Peninsula in Hilo.
According to county Prosecutor Kelden Waltjen, Seanson Marpel used a sword to rob a victims of his credit cards and cellphone outside Wailoa Grill, which is in the Suisan Building on Lihiwai Street.
The victim also sustained a “major laceration” to the lip, according to the complaint.
Marpel also was charged in relation to the unauthorized use and possession of credit cards, one belonging to the same victim, and the other to another individual, on Feb. 25 and 26.
Marpel is charged with first-degree robbery; second-degree assault; second-degree theft; first-degree terroristic threatening; methamphetamine possession; two counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information; and four counts each of third-degree identity theft; attempted fourth-degree theft, and fraudulent use of a credit card.
Hilo District Judge Kanani Laubach on Friday maintained Marpel’s bail at $80,400, and ordered him to return to court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.
The most serious offense, first-degree robbery, is a Class A felony offense which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment.
Second-degree assault, second-degree theft, first-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree identity theft, unauthorized possession of confidential personal information and simple possession of methamphetamine are all Class C felony offenses which carry a penalty of either five years in prison or four years probation and up to a year in jail.
Seanson remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
