An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Officers responding to a 4:54 p.m. call determined that a 2007 Honda Pilot sport-utility vehicle driven by 84-year-old Ken Rosene was westbound on Kaumana Drive when it ran off the road to the right and into a ditch. The vehicle then struck a rock embankment, causing the SUV to completely stop and block the westbound lane.

Mira, who was the front seat passenger, was unresponsive at the scene. Hawaii Fire Department rescue personnel extricated her from the vehicle, and she started to respond physically, but not verbally. She was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and subsequently to The Queen’s, where she died.

Rosene also was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he received treatment for his injury and eventually was discharged. Upon release, Rosene was arrested on suspicion of DUI and first-degree negligent injury. He was released from custody pending investigation on Friday.

The crash is now being investigated as a negligent homicide.
