The Hilo Education Arts Repertory Theatre, or HEART, has announced its upcoming production of Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge,” a gripping drama that examines justice, loyalty and betrayal within a working-class Italian-American community.
Directed by HEART’s Producing Artistic Director Larry Reitzer, the play will open this Friday at the East Hawaii Cultural Center in Hilo and will run through Sunday, Feb. 2.
Set in 1950s Brooklyn, “A View from the Bridge” tells the story of Eddie Carbone (played by David Greene), a longshoreman whose moral convictions and tragic flaws lead him to a devastating confrontation with his family.
As Eddie’s overprotective relationship with his niece, Catherine (played by Dayva Escobar), becomes strained by her growing affection for the young immigrant Rodolpho (Damien Stack), the play delves into themes of jealousy, pride and the high cost of misplaced loyalty.
Additional cast members include Suzenne (Zenne) Seradwyn as Beatrice, Eddie’s long-suffering wife, Greg Berney as Marco, Rodolpho’s brother, Saul Rollason as Alfieri, Wilfred Gee as Mike and Mike Caputo as Louis.
“Arthur Miller’s ‘A View from the Bridge’ is a powerful exploration of the choices that define us and the consequences that can arise when we allow our emotions to dictate our actions,” Reitzer said in a press release. “This play, while deeply rooted in the time and place it was written, speaks to universal themes of family, justice, and the human condition. I’m excited for our talented cast to bring these complex, deeply flawed characters to life.”
