This is a USGS video compilation of Episode 4 of the ongoing Kilauea summit eruption that began Wednesday.

The first clip shows Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists in the closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park collect tephra falling on a closed portion of Crater Rim Drive. Listen to the glassy lava particles tinkering as they land on the road.

Later clips show various angles of the erupting lava fountains, which reached up to about 328 feet (100 meters) in height. Watch as globs of lava fall onto the cone surrounding the vent and listen to sounds of the erupting vents, which some liken to the sounds of the ocean.

This is the fourth eruptive phase of an eruption that began Dec. 23.

The first phase lasted only 14 hours before a brief pause, after which it started again Christmas Eve and erupted for another 15 hours.

Following another brief pause, the third phase began Dec. 26 and continued for eight days until it paused again on Jan. 3.
