Police: Pedestrian struck early Monday in Puna dies

Police say a woman pedestrian struck by a pickup truck early Monday morning in Ainaloa subdivision has died.

The woman has been has been identified by police as 49-year-old Andrea-Gabrielle Miller of Pahoa. Miller, who was unresponsive at the scene was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center in critical condition. She was pronounced dead this at 11:20 a.m. this morning at Hilo Benioff Medical Center after succumbing to her injuries.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

According to police, Miller was struck by a 2022 Hyundai pickup truck at about dawn by as she was attempting to cross Ainaloa Boulevard without being in a marked crosswalk.

The pickup truck’s driver, a 36-year-old Pahoa man, was not injured as a result of the collision.

At this time police do not believe impairment or speed to be factors in this investigation.

Multiple witnesses have come forward and assisted in providing information relative to this investigation, which is continuing, according to police.

Miller’s death is the 21st official traffic fatality this year compared to 10 at the same time last year.
