HONOLULU — Two BIIF teams won their HHSAA State playoff games on Wednesday, while five fell into consolation brackets.
In Division II softball action, KSH won a quarterfinal game and Kohala HS won a consolation match.
Both Hilo HS and Waiakea HS’ baseball teams lost in the Division I quarterfinals, and Waiakea’s softball team also suffered a DI quarterfinal loss.
Konawaena HS and KSH’s baseball teams each lost their first games in the Division II playoffs.
DII SOFTBALL: KSH ADVANCES TO SEMIS
Three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled the Warriors past a two-run deficit which loomed over them since the top second.
Mistakes on Na Ali‘i’s side gave KSH the room it needed to plate its winning runs in the bottom sixth.
Emily Hora led off, singling on a ground ball to right field. Napua Ho then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but a sequence of infield errors allowed her to stretch all the way to third base as Hora scored.
Kahiwa Ili doubled on a line drive to left field, batting in Ho.
Tia Tanimoto sac-bunted to move Ili to third, then Rhian Ogawa also played small ball — hitting an infield grounder to bat Ili in.
Hora worked the circle for all seven innings —surrendering two earned runs on three hits and two walks, striking out five.
Ogawa went two-for-three with a RBI to lead the Warriors in the box.
Taja Souza took the loss in the circle — giving up six hits for two earned runs, striking out six.
Aiea, which defeated Lanai HS 13-2 on Tuesday, will drop into the fifth-place consolation bracket.
KSH will play its semifinal game today at 2:00 p.m.
Na Ali‘i will begin fifth-place consolation bracket play today.
DII SOFTBALL: COWGIRLS STAY ALIVE
Kohala’s softball team returned from Tuesday’s five-inning loss to defeat Waialua HS 11-7 and remain in the Division II ninth-place consolation bracket.
The Cowgirls will play their final outing, the ninth-place game, starting noon tomorrow at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Taking its second loss, Waialua fell out of the tourney.
DI SOFTBALL: IOLANI ROUTS WAIAKEA
Waiakea fell 16-3 to ‘Iolani HS in a run-ruled, five-inning affair.
The Raiders had a slim, 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning — but caught fire soon after, plating six runs in the third while shutting the Warriors out.
Waiakea put up three runs in the bottom fourth, but not until after ‘Iolani had already added seven more of their own runs in the top frame.
Madisen Kodani led WHS at the plate, going one-for-two with a RBI. She also notched four putouts in center field to lead her team on defense.
Waiakea ran through a revolving door of pitchers while attempting to supress ‘Iolani’s offense — rotating four players through the circle during the outing, who threw a combined total of 155 pitches, compared to ‘Iolani’s 107.
The Warriors will move into the fifth-place consolation bracket, starting play this afternoon.
The Raiders defeated Kaiser HS 14-3 on Tuesday, and will look to stay on a roll in the semifinals tonight.
DI BASEBALL: VIKINGS FALL TO SABERS
An early run kept Campbell HS just ahead of Hilo, leading the Vikings to a 2-1 loss.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Sabers took advantage of a walk, a HBP, a single and a sacrifice bunt to plate a run after shutting the Vikings out in the top frame.
For the next two innings, Hilo kept Campbell out of the run collumn — but was also quickly downed twice, leaving one on base in each inning.
The Vikings tied the game, temporarily, in the top fourth. Dylan Villanueva reached on a HBP, then Jayden Soriano went in for him as a pinch runner. A fielder’s choice allowed Boston Kobayashi to reach, then an error let Soriano take second and third. Then, Koa Marzo singled to bat Soriano in before the next batter lined into a double-play.
The Sabers quickly took back their lead with another run in the bottom fourth. After the leadoff struck out, the two-spot reached on a bunt, then advanced to second on a wild pitch before the three-hole walked. The following batter singled to bat in what would become the outing’s final run.
Journey Leialoha went two-for-two with a walk to record the best batting average for the Vikings. Marzo went two-for-three with a RBI.
Hilo will enter the Division I fifth-place consolation bracket starting at 3:30 p.m. today.
Campbell will advance to the semifinals, which will take place tonight.
DI BASEBALL: WAIAKEA BASEBALL LOSES QUARTERFINAL
After trailing 2-0 since the early innings, the Warriors attempted to launch a seventh-inning comeback — but could not plate enough runs to avoid taking a 2-1 loss to Mililani HS.
The Trojans took advantage of Waiakea’s mistakes to plate both of their runs in the top third. A walk, a reach on an error and HBP loaded the bases — then another HBP walked the leadoff across the plate. Mililani then began working the outfield with fly balls, the first of which was caught for an out – but the second allowed a runner to score before a third fly ball was caught to end the frame.
The Warriors fell short in a bottom-seventh effort. After the leadoff flew out, Gavin Nishida singled – and was replaced by pinch runner Kalama Ulibas. Ulibas advanced to second as the following batter grounded out, then advanced to third when Devin Garza singled. Jesse Inouye singled to bat in Ulibas, but he and Garza were stranded when the next batter lined out.
Nishida went two-for-two to lead WHS at the plate. In center field, Segovia led the Warriors with seven putouts. First-baseman Clemson Julian trailed with five putouts and an assist.
Waiakea will now fall into the fifth-place consolation bracket, and play its next game at 3:30 p.m. today. If both Waiakea and Hilo win today’s matchups, they will meet each other again in the fifth-place game.
Mililani, which defeated Saint Louis HS 2-1 on Tuesday, will advance to the semifinals tonight.
DII BASEBALL: KSH LOSES FIRST OUTING
Waianae HS defeated KSH 5-1 in the first round of the DII bracket.
The Seariders held the BIIF DII Champions to no runs until the bottom of the fourth inning, then both teams shut each other out for the remainder of the game.
In the bottom fourth, Dylan Hanson reached on a HBP after the leadoff popped out. Keagan-Hunter Pacheco went in as a pinch runner, then three-spot Noah Palea walked — and was replaced by pinch runner Brayden Malani. Shiloh Santos then grounded into a fielder’s choice that put Malani out, but gave Pacheco enough time to score.
Kaohu Kawelu went two-for-four to lead KSH in the box.
Today, the Warriors will begin fifth-place consolation bracket play — while Waianae enters the semifinals.
DII BASEBALL: WAIPAHU BLANKS KONAWAENA
No.1 seed Waipahu HS knocked off Konawaena 4-0, capitalizing on the Wildcats’ six errors.
The Maruaders scored a run in the bottom first, but remained in striking distance until they pulled away with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
The final run was plated when an infield error afforded a runner enough room to reach the plate from second base.
The Wildcats were held to just two hits for the outing. Trez Uemoto led at the plate, going one-for-two.
Waipahu will face Damien HS in the semifinals today, while Konawaena will drop into the fifth-place consolation bracket to face Moloka‘i HS.
If Konawaena and KSH each win their games today, they will meet again tomorrow for the fifth-place game.
