Manuel “Manny” Bega Sr., 93, of Keaau died Dec. 13 at a private care home. Born in Wailuku, Maui, he was a retired custodian for Pahoa High and Intermediate School. No services. Survived by sons, Manuel (Sally) Bega Jr., David (Ginny) Bega, Paul (Lisa) Bega and Charles (Kwynn) Bega; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Regulation, productivity and the meaning of life

A few days ago, The New York Times published a very interesting column by my colleague Ezra Klein about America’s peculiar lack of progress in the art of building things. Drawing on a recent paper by Austan Goolsbee and Chad Syverson, he noted that, at least according to official statistics, we’ve gone a half-century without any rise whatsoever, and maybe even a decline, in construction productivity — basically, the number of person-hours it takes to build a house or other structure of a given size.

Space Force vows ‘above and beyond’ cleanup of Maui spill

Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 30 through Feb. 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.
