The UH-Hilo baseball team closed its season with a doubleheader loss to No. 21 Azusa Pacific on the road on Thursday.
The Cougars beat the Vulcans 11-10 and 13-8 in Azusa, Calif., ending UHH’s season at 27-19 and 15-17 in the PacWest for sixth place.
In the 11-10 game, Tido Robles had an RBI single in the eighth inning for the game-winner.
Casey Yamauchi batted 3 for 5, Jaryn Kanbara had three RBIs, Ryan Cho went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, hitting a two-run homer in the fifth, and Brett Komatsu was 2 for 2 for the Vulcans, who finished with 11 hits.
Yamauchi became the third UHH batter to hit over .400 in a season. He finished with a .403 batting average in Division II competition. Michael Higa batted .415 in 2008 in Division I competition, and Guy Oshiro hit .423 in 1981 on the NAIA level.
Joe Gallagher finished at .348 with six home runs and 39 RBIs. Komatsu batted .331 with 11 RBIs, and Kanbara finished at .279 with six home runs and 25 RBIs.
Aaron Davis started and gave up four runs in 1 2/3 innings. John Kea pitched the final 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs.
UHH reliever Conor Meehan was 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA in 17 1/3 innings. Jacob Liberta was 3-0 with a 3.45 ERA in 15 2/3 innings. Davis went 5-1 with a 4.01 ERA in 51 2/3 innings.
In the 13-8 game, the Cougars hit three home runs and piled up 14 hits. George Christison batted 4 for 5 with five RBIs, belting a three-run homer in the fourth.
Yamauchi batted 2 for 5 with three RBIs, Brandyn Yoshida went 2 for 4, and Komatsu was 2 for 3. Mason Campbell batted 1 for 2 with a solo homer in the eighth.
James Yamasaki started and allowed six runs in three innings. Ty Honda, Jamieson Hirayama, Takashi Umino, and Cody Hirata followed in relief.
On Wednesday, UHH split at Azusa, winning 8-6 in the final start for Kyle Alcorn (8-6), then losing 3-2.
