During the week of April 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo, eight; and Puna, five.
So far this year, there have been 346 DUI arrests compared to 404 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.4%.
There have been 234 major accidents so far this year compared to 251 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8%.
To date, there have been 13 deaths on Big Island roads, but 12 official traffic fatalities, as one took place within the boundaries of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and police don’t count that on the official toll. The official traffic fatality count compares with eight official traffic deaths for the same time last year, an increase of 50%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
