Featuring power bats and power arms, Honokaa’s baseball team is off to a 3-0 start in BIIF Division II baseball.
Aidan Joaquin homered Tuesday and the junior and senior Justin Birch each struck out six more batters in the Dragons’ 10-2 victory against Pahoa on their home field.
Joaquin hit a two-run home run in the first and finished with two hits, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Birch worked four innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run. Joaquin pitched three innings and allowed two hits and a walk. In 18 innings over the three wins, the co-aces have combined to strike out 39 batters.
The competition does figure to get tougher for Honokaa, which plays at Konawaena on Monday and welcomes eight-time BIIF champion Kamehameha on March 31.
The Dragons finished with seven hits against the Daggers (1-1) and drew eight walks. Ioane Ka’aekuahiwi scored three runs.
Donivan Lynch collected two hits for Pahoa. Shane Sale-Silva struck out five in four innings in taking the loss.
Waiakea 20, Keaau 0: Kedren Kinzie homered and drove in five runs, Joshua Ward and Gavin Nishida also went deep, and the Warriors (2-0) outhit the Cougars (0-2) 14-0 to win at home.
Loren Iwata and Daycen Leite a combined on the three-inning no-hitter, with Iwata, a sophomore, striking out six and walking one in two innings.
Mason Hirata finished 4 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs scored, Kysen Wada collected two hits with three RBIs, and Dylan Honda had two hits and drove in two.
