Police arrest 18 for DUI

During the week of Feb. 21-27, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Hilo, six; and Puna, four.

So far this year, there have been 184 DUI arrests compared with 200 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8%.

There have been 113 major accidents so far this year compared with 120 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.8%.

To date, there have been eight official traffic fatalities, compared to five fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 60%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
