A tale of two halves amounted to a nightmarish finish for UH-Hilo’s men’s basketball team.
The Vulcans watched an 11-point halftime lead go up in flames Saturday at Azusa (Calif.) Pacific, as cold shooting doomed them to a 69-62 loss to snap a six-game winnings streak.
Ken West scored 18 points with nine rebounds, and Hayden Gray added 16 points with nine boards as the Cougars (7-6, 4-2 PacWest) moved just a game begins the Vuls (10-5, 6-2) for the top spot in the conference.
Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones scored 21 points for UHH, which shot just 9 of 33 from the field in the second half.
Azusa commanded the boards, holding a 33-20 edge.
The UHH women also had a five-game winning streak snapped, falling 79-57.
The Vuls (7-3, 4-2) shot just 31.3% from the floor. Jenna Waki led the way with 14 points and Nikki Miller had 10.
Alex Lowden led four scorers in double figures with 21 points for the Cougars (12-1, 8-0) who led 38-27 at the half and doubled up UHH (22-11) in the third quarter.
UHH’s Southern California road trip continues Monday at Concordia.
