Nearly 9,000 new cases statewide, 800 on Big Island, since New Year’s Day

There have been nearly 9,000 new COVID cases statewide in 2022 already, according to the state Department of Health.

The DOH reported today 3,044 new COVID cases statewide, continuing the surge in cases caused by the spread of the omicron variant. The DOH reported on Sunday 3,117 new cases, and on New Year’s Day 2,707 cases, bringing the 2022 statewide total to 8,868 so far.

On the Big Island, DOH reported 359 new cases today, with 195 and 238 new cases reported Jan. 1 and 2, respectively, for a 2022 total of 792.

Despite the high number of cases, DOH reported no new COVID hospitalizations today, nor any any COVID-related deaths.
