HONOLULU — The first and only woman to serve as mayor of Honolulu died earlier this month at age 93.
Eileen Anderson, who was mayor from 1981 to 1985, died Nov. 3, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced Tuesday.
She defeated incumbent mayor Frank Fasi in 1980 with 70% of the vote, Blangiardi said.
She was also the first person to be director of Hawaii’s Department of Budget and Finance, according to Blangiardi.
Gov. David Ige ordered flags of the United States and Hawaii fly at half-staff at all state offices and agencies, as well as the Hawaii National Guard, on Wednesday.
State representative’s DUI trial set for Monday
HONOLULU — A judge on Tuesday set a trial date next week for a n Oahu lawmaker arrested after police saw her driving the wrong way down a major Honolulu thoroughfare in February.
State Rep. Sharon Har has pleaded not guilty to one count of driving under the influence and one count of driving without vehicle insurance. Her trial is due to begin on Monday.
Lawmaker finds prison understaffed during visit
HONOLULU — Some guards are working 16-hour shifts because of a staffing shortage at a Hawaii prison, a state lawmaker said.
A state senator highlighted the staffing shortage by showing up unannounced to Halawa Correctional Facility on Monday after hearing guards complain of unsafe conditions.
During Sen. Kurt Fevella’s surprise inspection, he counted 58 guards when there were supposed to be 91, Hawaii News Now reported. Officials say there are 332 guards assigned to the prison, but more than 100 positions are either vacant or occupied by a guard on leave.
