Explore artist studios in Hawaiian Paradise Park and help bring art to the students of local high schools. The Paradise Studio Tour Artist Collective is having their 15th anniversary tour allowing the public into the studios where their art is created. Original art treasures and quality crafted gifts will be on display for sale from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
In keeping with their mission of not only bringing artists and patrons together, but also supporting, encouraging and inspiring young artists, 10% of all sales are donated to Puna district public high schools specifically for art supplies.
There have been donations of over $20,000 to date divided between Pahoa High, Keaau High and Hawaii Academy for Arts and Sciences.
Another supportive addition to the tour this year is sponsorship of the Abled Hawaii Artists Annual Sale at Studio D on 4th Avenue. Established in 2008, this group celebrates the spectrum of creativity and promotes inclusive entrepreneurship in the arts while raising awareness of our robust disability culture.
Six studio locations are open this year hosting 18 of the collective artists in a variety of media ranging from original fine art paintings, drawings and prints, to jewelry, ceramics, cement vessels, wood burning, silk fashions and stained glass. All are handcrafted on the Big Island by local artists inspired by the powerful beauty of this amazing place.
Studio D has the very accomplished realist artist and teacher Adare with oil paintings and wood burning 2D and 3D pieces. Adare operates the Kipaipai Art Foundation school from this location. Two past students will be there: Aly Kat with oil and sumi ink paintings and prints, and Aspen Dewey with oil paintings, woodwork, and her homemade soap bars.
Another teacher who started workshops for painting on silk via the Paradise Studio Tour 15 years ago is Patti Pease Johnson, who is a regular instructor for the Volcano Art Center. Her studio on 13th Avenue will include live demonstrations of dye painting on silk, scheduled for 2 p.m. both days. Painted silk scarves, tunics, and clothing, plus metal formed jewelry as well as original pastel, silk scrolls and watercolor paintings and prints will be on display. Her husband Scott Johnson will show detailed pen drawings, cards and bamboo vases.
The mixed media sculpture and high fire reduction glazed pottery of Shelby Smith will be featured at the new studio location on 2nd Avenue, along with his wife’s fine porcelain jewelry with genuine gold luster embellishments by Kimberly Langston Hagen.
Also on the tour is Rod Cameron, the internationally exhibited oil painter, who will be in his Beach Road studio to show his expressive drawings, oil paintings and prints.
Esther Szegedy, who is well known for her of whimsical flowers, fish, cats, dogs and mermaids conte crayon drawings, will now include carved ceramics in her art repertoire along with her prints. She and five other artists will be showing at the Paradise Park Community Center (HPP Hui) off Mak‘u Drive. Multiple artists include Stone O’Dougherty with one of a kind cold fusion sterling silver gemstone jewelry creations; Linda Brooks with stained glass and fused glass jewelry, ornaments and art pieces; and Ratna De Lewis’s stone beaded jewelry. Two ceramic artists with very different styles include the unique crystaline glazed functional pottery of Robert Troost; and the spirit vessels Margot Robinson calls Mystical Dreamer Sculptures made of pit fired clay. The Hui will also have the Sumthing Diffrent food lunch wagon as well as restrooms open to the public.
A new studio addition on Loke Road by the ocean is Ethel Mann’s home. She does a variety of subjects with acrylic and oil paintings.
Many of the participating artists have work in galleries across the state and in collections worldwide.
