A record number of new COVID-19 cases were reported Friday across the state and on Hawaii Island.
The state Department of Health reported 1,035 cases statewide. Of those, 184 were on the Big Island, the largest number of infections identified in a single day.
According to the DOH, the number of Big Island cases since the start of the pandemic now totals 7,100.
In Hilo, 502 cases have been reported in the past 14 days, while 425 infections were counted in Kailua-Kona.
During the same period, 158 cases have been reported in Keaau; 52 in Mountain View; 73 in Pahoa; 73 in the Captain Cook, Ocean View and Honaunau areas; 53 in Kealakekua; 76 in the Waikoloa and Puako areas; and 100 in Waimea.
The deaths of nine Oahu residents, ages 50 to 79, also were reported Friday.
Eight of those individuals were hospitalized and had underlying health conditions. One man, 70-79, had underlying health conditions but died at home.
There have been 9,790 cases reported statewide over the past 14 days.
Hawaii County now boasts an 8.9% test positivity rate, compared to an 8.4% positivity rate statewide.
The City and County of Honolulu has the highest positivity rate in the state at 9.8%.
In Hawaii County, 72% of cases since late May have come from community-associated spread. Meanwhile, resident travel accounts for 6% of cases and nonresident travel makes up just 1% of coronavirus cases.
A majority of coronavirus infections have occurred in people under 50.
Individuals 18-24 account for 24% of Hawaii’s COVID-19 infections, the largest percentage of any age group, according to the DOH.
Keiki 17 and younger account for 16% of cases, while adults 30-39 make up 19% of infections.
Adults 40-49 comprise 14% of coronavirus cases, while individuals 50-59 account for 12%, and 60-69 have make up 9% of cases.
Kupuna 70-79 and over 80, among the first to be eligible for vaccines, only account for 4% and 2% of cases, respectively.
As case counts have climbed, however, so have the number of vaccinations administered.
According to the DOH, the weekly vaccine count has increased for four consecutive weeks.
During the week ending July 30, 14,670 doses were administered, but during the week ending Aug. 27, 27,893 doses were given.
Data from the DOH shows that 62.6% of all residents in Hawaii have been fully vaccinated, while 70.9% have received at least one dose.
In Hawaii County, 59% of residents have completed their vaccinations, and 71% have received at least one shot.
