Police charged two men after a brief standoff Tuesday on Uhini Ana Road in Mountain View.
Wesley Kaimana Brooks, 33, was charged with first-degree burglary, and 30-year-old Peter J. Vana Staudinger III of Hilo was charged with first-degree burglary, and first-degree unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle Brooks’ bail was set at $25,000, and Vana Staudinger’s bail was set at $15,000.
According to police, shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday officers responded to an active burglary after the property’s caretaker reported hearing someone on the property and saw a vehicle that didn’t belong there. The caretaker told officers, that shortly afterwards, he heard gunshots coming from the area of the home.
Police sent its SWAT unit and Criminal Investigation Division, which established a perimeter, but negotiators were unable to make contact with anyone in the residence.
The SWAT unit entered the house, which was vacant. A short time later, police arrested Brooks and Vana Staudinger without incident on the roadway near the property.
Brooks was on probation for first-degree terroristic threatening and being a felon in possession of a firearm. At his initial appearance Friday in Hilo District Court, Judge Jeffrey Hawk denied his request for court-supervised release without bail, and maintained his $25,000 bail.
He ordered Brooks to return Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.
Vana Staudinger posted bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 5.
