Sultry spring in Hilo

Hilo continues to be in the midst of a spring heat wave, according to the National Weather Service, with five days of record-tying high temperatures in the past two weeks.

On Saturday and Monday, the thermometer at Hilo International Airport registered afternoon highs of 85 degrees. That tied the record high for May 1 set in 1980, and the record high for May 3 set in 2018.

Last week, the mercury at the airport hit a balmy 86 degrees on Wednesday and Friday. That tied the record for April 27 set in 1977 and for April 30 set in 2010.

The afternoon high at the airport was also 86 degrees on April 21, tying the record high set 54 years ago in 1967.

It remained warm in Hilo on Tuesday, with a high of 85 degrees shortly before 1 p.m. That fell a single degree short of the 86 degrees registered in 2019 at Hilo International Airport.
