During the week of April 19-25, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and three were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; South Hilo, four; Puna and South Kohala, three each; and Ka‘u, one.
So far this year, there have been 405 DUI arrests compared to 288 during the same period last year, an increase of 40.6%.
There have been 249 major accidents so far this year compared to 269 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.4%.
To date, there have been eight official traffic fatalities, the same as for this time period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
