The Hawaii Supreme Court has indefinitely suspended Hilo attorney Brooks L. Bancroft from the practice of law, effective April 16.
According to a release from the high court’s disciplinary board, Bancroft was suspended for failing to cooperate with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel in its investigation into allegations of misconduct.
The ODC’s request to the court and the court’s order to show cause were personally served on Mr. Bancroft, but he failed to respond, the board said.
The suspension is effective immediately and shall remain in effect until Bancroft satisfies the court that he is qualified and fit to resume the practice of law.
In the interim, Bancroft shall not accept any new retainer or engage as an attorney for any person in any case or legal matter of any nature.
Bancroft, 43, who was admitted to the Hawaii Bar in 2004, is required to promptly notify all his clients and any attorneys for any adverse party in any pending litigation of his suspension and consequent inability to act as an attorney.
He’s also required to surrender all papers and property to which the clients are entitled and return any advance payments of fees that have not been earned.
