During the week of March 8-14, Hawaii Island police arrested 31 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, eight; Puna, six; South Kohala, four; and North Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 259 DUI arrests compared to 238 during the same period last year; an increase of 8.8%.
There have been 151 major accidents so far this year compared to 206 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26.7%.
To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities compared to six fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 16.7 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
