A Hilo man was killed this morning after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Komohana and Kukuau streets in Hilo.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, Soo Lee, a 73-year-old Hilo man, was driving east on Kukuau Street at 4:52 a.m. when he evidently failed to stop at a stop sign at the Komohana Street intersection and was struck by a southbound vehicle.
Lee was unresponsive at the scene and was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:51 a.m.
A passenger in Lee’s vehicle, a 29-year-old Hilo man, was also transported to Hilo Medical with non-life-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition.
There were two Hilo men in the southbound vehicle, a 34-year-old driver and a 75-year-old passenger. The driver was uninjured, while the passenger was transported to and later released from Hilo Medical Center with minor injuries.
Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
This is the 14th fatal traffic collision on the Big Island in 2020. By this time in 2019, there had been 18 fatal crashes.
