Rural Midwest hospitals struggling to handle virus surge

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. — Rural Jerauld County in South Dakota didn’t see a single case of the coronavirus for more than two months stretching from June to August. But during the past two weeks, its rate of new cases per person soared to one of the highest in the nation.

Crack team of geologists measure the Koa‘e fault system

The Koa‘e fault system connects Kilauea’s East and Southwest rift zones south of the caldera. Faults here appear as low cliffs, or “scarps,” along Hilina Pali Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
