During the week of May 18-24, Hawaii Island Police arrested 12 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents; one was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; South Kohala, three; Puna and South Hilo, one each.
So far this year, there have been 342 DUI arrests compared to 456 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25%.
There have been 322 major accidents so far this year compared to 377 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.6%.
To date, there have been eight official traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year, an increase of 14.3%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
