Joshua Kitamura of Troop 82, a senior at Waiakea High School, was awarded the Eagle Scout rank on Feb. 8 at a Court of Honor at Hilo Meishoin. Kitamura began his Scouting journey 12 years ago in Waiakeawaena Pack 65 where he also earned the Arrow of Light, the Cub ScoutsÂ’ highest award.
Joshua Kitamura of Troop 82, a senior at Waiakea High School, was awarded the Eagle Scout rank on Feb. 8 at a Court of Honor at Hilo Meishoin. Kitamura began his Scouting journey 12 years ago in Waiakeawaena Pack 65 where he also earned the Arrow of Light, the Cub Scouts’ highest award.
Kitamura is proud of the lessons he has learned along the Eagle Scout trail. Fewer than 4% of all Scouts in the U.S. have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout since the inception of the Scouting program in 1912.
Kitamura’s Eagle project consisted of securing funding for and building 21 target stands for the air rifle teams of Waiakea High School, Hilo High School, Christian Liberty Academy and Saint Joseph’s High School. The project was completed with the assistance of fellow Scouts, air riflery students and parents.
Taz Rosam, a teacher at Waiakea Intermediate School, served as Kitamura’s guide and mentor on the project.
Kitamura is a member of Waiakea High’s air rifle, judo and golf teams. He has served as junior staff for Hui Okinawa’s Childrens’ Cultural Day Camp for 4 years, is an avid fisher and hiker, and loves playing ukulele and basketball.
