The Zonta Club of Hilo announces open applications for awards and scholarships for women in the areas of public affairs, nursing, technology, and business. The deadline to apply is March 15.
This year’s $10,000 in cash assistance will be presented in memory of former Zontian Patricia O’Toole, whose estate donated $5,000 to the club.
“We encourage women to apply for financial support for brighter futures in their chosen fields,” said Kathleen McGilvray, Zonta Club of Hilo scholarship chair. “We look forward to reading applications from a diverse pool of applicants.”
The Women in Public Affairs Award Program (YWPA) encourages more young women to participate in public affairs by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements, and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.
Open to women aged 16-19 (as of April 1), this award encourages young women to pursue careers or seek leadership positions in public policy making, government, and volunteer organizations and further their education with these aims in view.
The Women’s Nursing Degree Scholarship is for women who demonstrate interest in continuing their nursing studies toward an advanced degree or leadership track. It is open to women who are currently enrolled as full-time students in a nursing degree program at University of Hawaii at Hilo or Hawaii Community College with an above-average record in scholastic standing (3.0 or better GPA) and who show a financial need.
The Women in Technology Scholarships encourage women to pursue education, career opportunities, and leadership roles in technology. Women of any age, pursuing a technology degree or closely related program, who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field, are eligible to apply. Women not enrolled in a university are also eligible, with additional requirements.
The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships (JMK) are awarded to women undertaking business studies who have demonstrated outstanding potential in the field. Open to women of any age, students must be enrolled in at least the second year of an undergraduate program through the final year of a master’s program at the time the application is submitted.
Top winners of the YWPA award and JMK scholarship will be advanced from the club level to compete for additional awards and scholarships at the district and international levels of Zonta.
Zonta Club of Hilo is member of Zonta International, whose mission is to empower women through service and advocacy. Applications are available at www.zontahilo.org/scholarships-grants/.
