Kona standoff resolved peacefully

KAILUA-KONA — A standoff between a barricaded man and police ended peacefully this afternoon with the suspect exiting his home and police taking him into custody.

The incident unfolded shortly before 9 a.m. when Hawaii Police Department officers responded to what was initially described as a ‘situation’ at a home on Ahulani Street, between Kiekie and Hookumu streets. Neighboring homes were immediately evacuated and the department’s Special Response Team was deployed to the scene.

The team arrived about an hour later at the two-story pink-colored home situated on the Ka‘u side of Ahulani Street.

Police said to the best of their knowledge the man was alone. The man was taken into police custody shortly before 3 p.m.
